Rebuilding a 1978 Nuovo Record crankset
Every step from cellar find to first ride, including the two mistakes we made so you don't have to. Degreaser, patience, and one very specific 15 mm wrench.
The crankset arrived the way most good parts do: filthy, underestimated, and cheaper than it should have been. Under thirty years of cellar grime was the classic 144 BCD Nuovo Record — the pattern that ran the peloton for two decades and still bolts onto more bikes than you'd think.
First rule: no wire brushes. Aluminium this old has a skin, and once you cut through it there's no putting it back. We soak, we scrape with wood, we polish with paste and patience. An hour in, the arms were already showing that deep chrome-adjacent shine that no modern crank quite manages.
The two mistakes
Mistake one: trusting the old crank bolts. They looked fine. One wasn't, and stripped on reassembly — a €4 part that can cost you a €180 crank. Replace them by default. Mistake two: over-polishing the chainring teeth. You want the wear pattern visible; it tells the chain where home is.
Reassembly is twenty minutes if you've laid your parts out, three hours if you haven't. Torque the bolts to 32 Nm, spin it, listen. A rebuilt Record crank makes no sound at all — that silence is the whole point.

The crank bolt warning is real. Stripped one on a Gran Sport last year and spent a month finding a replacement arm. €4 insurance indeed.
A month is fast! We keep a small stash of NOS bolts for exactly this — just added them to the shop.
